By Sea

Via Cruise Ship

Grenada is a port for many cruise ships. The cruise ships generally dock just north of the St. George’s harbor at the pier.

Via Water Taxi

If your schedule doesn’t permit riding the ferry, and you don’t mind traveling on a bumpy motorboat across the open ocean, then the water taxi may be just right. It takes 40 minutes to travel to Union Island from Carriacou and will cost around US $75. When you get to the waterfront, ask around to determine who is safe to ride with, as not everyone has the best seafaring skills.

Via Yacht

Immigration, which is open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., can be cleared at two places on Grenada Island: in St. George’s at Grenada Yacht Services (telephone: 440-2508) or on Prickly Bay at Spice Island Marine Services (telephone: 444-4342). Most of the yachts will anchor in the nearby lagoon in St. George’s. If you are unable to clear immigration at one of these locations, you go to the St. George’s police station to receive all the necessary stamps. Immigration clearance should be made in Hillsborough on Carriacou.

Horizon Yacht Charters (www.horizonyachtcharters.com; 439-1000) is located at True Blue Bay Marina and will give you a boating experience like no other. Sea is the best way to see Grenada. Guests can arrange for a yacht full of crew so that you can relax or you can anchor right in and be the captain of your own yacht.

Moorings (www.moorings.com; 444-4439) can be located at Secret Harbour. Sea Breeze Yacht Charters (telephone: 444-4924) can be located in Lance aux Épines at Spice Island Marine Services.

The primary anchorages can be found along Grenada’s southwest side, which include True Blue Bay, Prickly Bay, Hog Island and Mt. Hartman Bay.

By Water

A boat service, the MV Jasper runs between Union Island and Carriacou in the Grenadines and St. Vincent. The trip is one hour and costs EC $20. It leaves Union Island at 7:30 a.m. on Mondays and Thursdays to travel to Carriacou. On the same days, it will return at 12:30 p.m.

There are commercial ships that transport goods between Carriacou or Petit Martinique and Union Island. These ships will allow guests to hitch a ride. Alternatively, you hop on a bumpy water taxi and make the trip in 40 minutes for somewhere between EC $100 and EC $150.

Entering Grenada

Before entering Grenada, guests will need to display an onward ticket and a valid passport. If no ticket is presented, sufficient funds will be required to permit your stay on the Island.

By Air

Point Salines International Airport has an ATM, pay phones, Wi-Fi, car rental offices and even a restaurant. Prior to reaching immigrations, in the arrivals section, guests will find a tourist office booth.

The airlines that fly to and from Grenada from the Caribbean and further are as follows:

Air Jamaica – Can be reached via telephone at 439-2093 or on the web at www.airjamaica.com

American Eagle – San Juan – Can be reached via telephone at 444-222 or on the web at www.aa.com.

British Airways – London – Can be reached via telephone at 444-1221 and on the web at www.ba.com.

LIAT – Tobago, St. Vincent, Trinidad and Barbados – Can be reached via telephone at 444-5428 and on the web at www.liatairline.com.

Virgin Atlantic – London – Can be reached via telephone at 439-7470 or on the web at www.virgin-atlantic.com.

The Lauriston airport at Carriacou is small with just one ticket counter. Prime Travel (telephone 443-7362) has a booth at this airport and can assist with car rentals, ticket sales and any other necessary travel essentials.

SVG Air (www.svgair.com; 444-3549) offers private air charters as well as scheduled flights to Union Island, St. Vincent, Grenada, Barbados, St. Lucia, Dominica, Martinique, Petit St. Vincent, Palm Island, Mustique, Canouan and Beguia.

If there are no open flights, a charter flight can sometimes be organized with a group and the cost can be split. This will take you to or from Carriacou. More details can be obtained from Prime Travel.

By Boat - There are two ways to travel across sea in Grenada: cargo ships and The Osprey. A cargo ship will be cheap, but it is slow, so it isn’t for individuals that are on a set schedule. The Osprey is a fast catamaran that will leave and get you somewhere on time, but it can be somewhat expensive. Both options will get you from Point A to Point B. the decision is in the speed and whether you want air conditioning and a snack bar or if you want to use your luggage as a seat.

Cargo and Passenger Boats - Using cargo boats to satisfy your island hopping adventures can be interesting, and is a method of travel chosen by more visitors than one might think. However, traveling around the Caribbean on a cargo boat doesn’t allow you to have a fixed schedule – but for many, that’s the interesting part. Cargo boats depart from the dock when they get their cargo, not when their passengers want to leave. However, you can ask around at the dock and generally get an approximate time on when the cargo boat might leave so that you can hitch a ride. If you are on Grenada Island, you should go to the large boats in St. George’s on the north side of Carenage. If you are on Carriacou, you can find the cargo boats in Tyrrel Bay, sometimes, but more often at the pier at Hillsborough. You can purchase your ticket on board and the larger boats’ fare is usually around EC $20 for one way.

Catamarans Osprey (www.ospreylines.com; 440-8126) is the most reliable and fastest way to move from one island to another. The catamaran seats 144 and connects the three islands of Grenada in under two hours. A ticket for a one-way trip to Carriacou from Grenada is $80, and $160 for round-trip. A ticket for Carriacou to Petit Martinique is $30 one-way and $60 round trip. Reservations aren’t typically required unless it’s a holiday. Ticket may be purchased from the office before department or on board. The Osprey departs in St. George’s from the east of Carenage.

Osprey Schedule –

Grenada Island to Petit Martinique and Carriacou – Departs weekdays at 9:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., 9:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday’s at 8:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Carriacou to Grenada Island – Departs weekdays and Saturdays at 6:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., and Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

Carriacou to Petit Martinique – Departs weekdays and Saturdays at 10:30 a.m., Monday through Thursday at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday’s at 9:30 a.m.

Petit Martinique to Grenada Island and Carriacou – Departs Tuesday to Friday at 5:30 a.m. and daily at 3:00 p.m.

Via Cars and Motorcycles Rental – There are several rental agencies where visitors can rent motorcycles or cars on Grenada Island a few on the Island of Carriacou.

By Bus and Tram Both Carriacou and Grenada Island have buses that offer visitors an excellent way to truly experience the community. School kids, shoppers and commuters will all be in the bus. Often times, the seats are overflowed and the seats will rock back and forth to music as the driver toots the bus’s horn at potential passengers and friends.

Via Local Transport Taxi – There are plenty of taxis on Grenada Island and a few minibuses on Carriacou that act as taxis.

Via Air Travel SVG Air (www.svgair.com; 444-3549) transports passengers to and from Carriacou and Grenada Island.
